220 former MMDCEs endorse Bawumia to lead NPP

A total of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal Chief Executives (MMDCEs) on Monday pledged their support to former Vice President Dr. Mahamud Bawumia to lead the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 general election.

Addressing a press conference in the Ghanaian capital of Accra, the group said they are convinced Dr. Bawumia is their best bet to lead the main opposition party to victory in the 2028 presidential election.

“Following extensive consultations with all aspirants, and thorough assessment of their vision, competence, and commitment to the NPP’s progress, we are convinced beyond any doubt that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028,” said the group.

The former MMDCEs also pledged to work hard for the former Vice President marshalling all forces to ensure they delivered massive support for Dr. Bawumia

“Today, 220 former MMDCEs—comprising men and women who have served at the grassroots level with dedication—have signed onto this declaration, pledging not just our votes, but our time, resources, and energy to mobilise, campaign, and deliver massive support for Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy,” it added.

They further pledged to use their experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message get to the rank and file of the party as well as Ghanaians in general.

“Our endorsement is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic and operational commitment. With 95% of us having previously served as Constituency and Regional Executives—some for over 16 years—we possess an intimate understanding of the NPP’s structures, dynamics, and electoral needs. We will deploy this experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana,” it further stated.

The former MMDCEs further observed that the country needs a visionary, competent and someone who appeals to the public and noted the former Vice President embodies those qualities.

“The stakes are high, and Ghana needs a leader with vision, competence, and electoral appeal. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia embodies these qualities, and we, the 220 former MMDCEs, are fully committed to ensuring his victory—first in the primaries, and ultimately in the 2028 general elections,” the group concluded.

The NPP is scheduled to hold its presidential primary on Januaury 31st, 2026 to elect a new flagbearer to lead the party in the 2028 general election. Enditem
