The government of Ghana has announced new oil, gas discoveries located within the Cape Three Points Block 4 (CTP-4) as commercially viable, according to a statement by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition late Friday.
The statement, signed by Richmond Rockson, spokesperson and head of communication for the Energy Ministry, said the announcement follows the successful completion of an appraisal program confirming the commercial viability of hydrocarbon resources in the Eban-1X (oil) and Akoma-1X (gas and condensate) wells.
The declaration, submitted on 3rd July 2025, was made by a consortium of joint venture (JV) partners comprising Eni Ghana Exploration & Production Ltd., Vitol Upstream Tano Ltd., Woodfields Upstream Ghana Ltd., and GNPC Exploration & Production Company Ltd. (Explorco), in collaboration with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
Minister for Energy and Green Transition John Abdulai Jinapor, who described the declaration as a pivotal development, emphasized that it affirms the government’s commitment to the sustainable development of Ghana’s hydrocarbon assets.
“It highlights the immense potential of our offshore resources to fuel economic transformation, enhance energy security, and drive Ghana’s industrialization agenda,” said Jinapor.
Following this milestone, the joint venture partners are expected to prepare a comprehensive plan of development (PoD) aimed at ensuring optimal resource recovery, value maximization, and increased local content in line with national policy objectives.
The ministry, in partnership with the Petroleum Commission and GNPC, has pledged to provide oversight and support to ensure the Eban-Akoma project is implemented effectively and in alignment with Ghana’s long-term energy strategy.
The statement further emphasized that the development underscores the government’s dedication to nurturing a transparent, resilient, and investor-friendly energy sector that delivers sustainable value to the Ghanaian people.
The West African country discovered oil in commercial quantities in 2007 with the discovery of the Jubilee Field in the Tano Basin, offshore Cape Three Points in the western region (province).
It commenced production in December 2010 and has since discovered two other fields, including the Sankofa and Gye Nyame (SGN), as well as Tweneboa, Enyerra, and Ntonme (TEN). Enditem
