A mining pit collapse late Wednesday at Akyem Wenchi, a community in the Denkyembour district of the Eastern Region of Ghana, led to the death of 4 persons underground, according to an eyewitness account.
According to sources, the four, who are all men, had gone underground when the mining pit collapsed on them, while 20 others, who are said to be alive, are trapped underground.
Meanwhile, the Ghanaian government had deployed personnel from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ambulance Service to the scene of the incident to attempt to evacuate the bodies trapped.
Rescue efforts are currently underway with the assistance of residents. Enditem
