At least seven people were killed in coordinated overnight attacks by a group of suspected gunmen across about four villages in Nigeria’s southern state of Imo, police said on Friday.
Henry Okoye, police spokesperson in Imo, told reporters in Owerri, the state capital, that several people were left injured following the “gruesome” attacks in the Ideato North local government area between Thursday night and Friday morning.
The attacks were suspected to have been carried out by members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra and Eastern Security Network, Okoye said.
A tactical unit of the police has been deployed to conduct an intensive search of the affected areas, prevent further attacks, and restore lasting peace, he said.
The gunmen, riding on several motorcycles, invaded the four villages, opening fire on villagers without any provocation, and killing over 14 people in different locations, the state-owned News Agency of Nigeria reported, citing local sources. Enditem
