GPRTU, COPEC reject 20% transport fare hike by GRTCC

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) have rejected a purported 20 percent transport hike by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) on Tuesday.

According to the GPRTU, the decision by the GRTCC was politically motivated, and it will not be part of such a move to increase transport fares now, citing lack of consultation.

Public Relations Officer for the GPRTU, Abass Imoro, said, “We have not had discussions on transport increase, and we are not part of this decision.”

Executive Secretary of COPEC, Duncan Amoah, indicated the decision by the GRTCC cannot be justified based on the figures and that he sees the decision as emotional and a bit political.

He explained that an attempt to increase transport fares now would worsen the plight of the people.

“Our attention has been drawn to a public sentiment by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council on a purported looming transport fare increment of about 20 percent effective Friday, the 8th of August, 2025. Our checks with the various transport unions, including the GPRTU and other driver unions, indicate no such decision has been taken,” said COPEC in a statement signed by Duncan Amoah.

“It is also difficult to comprehend what matrices inform any such drastic upward reviews of public transport fares, as that largely affects the poor and already suffering masses,” it added.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of the GRTCC Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah insists the proposed public transport hike is necessary and will go ahead to implement it on Friday. Enditem
