Almost 80 pct of Guineans are under 35: latest census

Seventy-nine percent of residents in Guinea are under 35 years old, according to preliminary results of the country’s latest census.

People under the age of 15 account for 43 percent of the total population of 17,521,167, while those aged 65 and above represent only 4.2 percent. The average age of Guineans is 22.2 years.

The figures cover only residents living within the national territory and do not include Guineans living abroad, Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah told a briefing on Wednesday on the results of the 4th General Population and Housing Census.

There are more women than men: 51.8 percent female and 48.2 percent male, according to data issued by the National Institute of Statistics.

According to the census, the Kankan region is the most populous in Guinea, with more than 4 million inhabitants, followed by the capital, Conakry, with 3.5 million residents.

The results also indicate an average population density of 71 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The census shows that 61.3 percent of Guineans live in rural areas, compared with 38.7 percent in urban areas, underscoring the continued demographic weight of rural communities.

The census results will help the government to better guide policies and plan investments in key sectors such as education, healthcare, road infrastructure, housing, and access to water and electricity.  Enditem
