At least 28 dead as firefighters battle to control massive fire ripping through shoe factory in eastern China

At least 28 people have died after a fire tore through a shoe factory in Jinjiang, in China’s Fujian Province.

Footage shows thick black smoke pouring from the building as flames engulf several floors. Firefighters are seen battling the blaze, while people remain trapped on a rooftop surrounded by smoke.

According to local media, the fire broke out at around midday at Huiteng Shoes Co. Ltd., where 239 people were on site.

A total of 213 people were evacuated. Two later died in hospital, while 26 others who had been reported missing were later confirmed dead.

More than 500 firefighters were sent to the rescue operation.

Authorities said the factory owner and several others had been detained, as investigators work to establish what caused the fire.

President Xi Jinping has called for all-out search and rescue efforts, support for victims’ families, and a full investigation into the disaster.
