Paramedics, rescuers and citizens mobilised in one of Cali’s commercial areas to address the damage caused by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake, which has left at least 111 dead in Colombia.
Footage filmed on Monday shows dozens of people helping to remove concrete blocks and other debris in the vicinity of the Jaime Aparicio Sports Complex, near the junction of Nueva Granada Avenue with the South-eastern Motorway.
The quake had its epicentre in San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, and also caused damage to some businesses, mainly to windows and shopfronts.
Cali’s mayor, Alejandro Eder, reported that at least 20 buildings collapsed due to the earthquake, and requested rescue brigade support from the mayors of Medellín and Bogotá.
According to the tally provided by President Abelardo de la Espriella, the quake has left 111 dead, 87 injured, 37 homes destroyed, 1,575 homes damaged and 61 buildings collapsed.
