Chadian court remands former PM in custody

A court in Chad on Tuesday remanded in custody former Prime Minister Succes Masra.

Francis Kadjilembaye, Masra’s lawyer, said Masra was heard by a state attorney and then examined by a judge before being placed in pre-trial detention.

“Hearing will begin immediately depending on the availability of the judge,” Kadjilembaye told a press conference in the national capital of N’Djamena.

Masra was arrested last week in connection with a probe into allegations of inciting the public to hatred and hostility, according to Oumar Mahamat Kedelaye, the country’s attorney general.

Kedelaye said an inquiry by judicial police revealed an alleged involvement of Masra “through hateful messages circulated on social media calling on the population to arm themselves” in a herder-farmer violent clashes that killed over 40 people in the country’s southern province of Logone Occidental.

Masra, who is also the president of the opposition political party The Transformers, went into exile in 2022 but later returned to the country and was appointed prime minister by President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno. After serving as prime minister for five months in 2024, Masra resigned to pave the way for the formation of a new government.  Enditem
