Displaced families at Atira Camp in Yemen’s southern Lahij Governorate spoke of harsh living conditions – with shortages of food, water, medicine and basic necessities.
Footage filmed on Monday shows children sitting among dilapidated tents, and people walking around the camp and filling water tanks.
Abdul Qawi Ahmed from Al Hudaydah Governorate, said his family of 10 had received just one tent and three mattresses: “We have no kitchen utensils, gas cylinders or blankets.”
Another, Ahmed Ibrahim, said the available assistance was limited and insufficient, warning of food shortages and widespread hunger in the camp – and said there was no medical care available.
Nahid Ibrahim, a representative on the community committees at Atira Camp, admitted the camp was suffering from key shortages.
“We are suffering from water shortages. Water is available, but not in sufficient quantities. There is also a shortage of medication. There is no laboratory, and no first aid services are available in the evening; first aid is available only in the morning,” she said.
It comes amid renewed fighting in Yemen between the Houthis and the internationally recognised government. The United Nations said in a report on Tuesday that more than 250,000 people had been displaced within the country since clashes resumed.
