Ethiopia names new federal administration, pledges elections

Ethiopia has established a six-month federal caretaker administration for Tigray after the country’s House of Federation suspended the previous regional administration following renewed fighting.

Stills released on Friday by Ethiopia’s Office of the Prime Minister show Abiy Ahmed meeting officials, shaking hands and posing for photographs in Addis Ababa.

The new administration will work to restore security, rebuild war-damaged infrastructure, help displaced residents return home and resume public services.

It has also been tasked with preparing for regional elections within six months.

Addis Ababa has accused the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) of obstructing efforts to implement the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement and reigniting fighting.

The government says the administration will coordinate with federal and regional security forces to encourage fighters to surrender their weapons and return to civilian life.

The Pretoria agreement ended a devastating two-year war that killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions, leaving Tigray facing a severe humanitarian crisis.
