Families of the victims of the Beirut port blast – along with activists and other supporters – took to the streets of the city on Tuesday to mark the 6th anniversary of the tragedy.
Footage shows participants marching through streets, holding photos of the victims and signs that read ‘Independent judiciary for a fair truth.’ Several bereaved families were seen delivering speeches.
Mari Saadeh Andon, the mother of one of the victims, said: “We will be here next year. We need to know who was responsible for bringing [ammonium] nitrate, who used it, and who blew it up, as well as any new updates.”
Andon also mourned her son: “I missed you a lot. I missed your laugh and moments when you used to call out good morning to me from the window. I can remember it as if it were yesterday.”
Brother of one of the victims, William Noun, praised the Minister of Justice’s promise to secure a breakthrough in the investigation within 60 days: “This is the first time the public prosecution has set a deadline”.
Head of ‘Together Association’, Ahmed Marwa, was optimistic that the ongoing investigation will mark a turning point, ultimately revealing the truth. “We shall not cease our efforts until justice is served,” he added.
The catastrophic explosion on August 4, 2020 saw 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate detonating, leaving over 200 people dead and 7,000 others injured.
