The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) said on Thursday that the early morning’s widespread power outage was as a result of major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line, which triggered the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal plants.
According to GRIDCo, the shutdown was part of the national power system’s protection mechanisms designed to safeguard the stability and integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
“The Ghana Grid Company Limited wishes to inform the general public that at approximately 4.30 a.m. today, Thursday, 20th August 2026, the national power system experienced a major fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line,” read the statement.
“Immediately following the incident, GRIDCo engineers, working in close coordination with other power sector agencies, took steps to isolate the affected transmission line and commenced the safe and systematic restoration of the power system,” it added
Several parts of the country were plunged into darkness in the wee hours of Thursday following a widespread power outage, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) confirmed in a statement.
It, however, said electricity supply has already been restored to some affected areas, with restoration efforts continuing for the remaining customers throughout the day.
The outage affected several suburbs of the national capital, including Adabraka, Achimota, Adenta, Dzorwulu, Legon, Madina, Oyarifa, Tesano, and Weija, with residents reporting outages from 4.15 a.m. local time.
The eastern port city of Tema, the industrial enclave of the country, was not spared either, with surrounding communities including Ashaiman, Kpone, and Katamanso, as well as towns in other regions (provinces) including Aburi in the eastern region, Tamale in the northern region, and parts of the Ashanti and Central regions.
On July 29, 2026, several parts of the country, including communities in Accra, Tema, Kasoa, and parts of the Ashanti and Eastern regions, also experienced a widespread power outage. Enditem
