Armed with just a stick, a shopkeeper stood her ground against suspected looters in Paris, as violent unrest swept through the French capital.
Footage from Saturday shows the woman wielding a stick to protect her shop, with several bystanders rushing to her defence and helping drive back those approaching the premises.
The confrontation unfolded during nationwide protests over soaring living costs and deteriorating public services, which drew around 550,000 demonstrators, according to French authorities. While most marched peacefully, violence erupted in several cities, with rioters clashing with police, setting fires and looting businesses. Nearly 2,400 people were arrested.
President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence and vowed to bring those responsible to justice, while acknowledging the grievances of peaceful demonstrators. French officials blamed radical far-left groups and opportunistic looters for much of the destruction.
