A gas explosion tore through an apartment complex in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas, on Friday, killing at least 3 people including a child and injuring several others, according to local authorities.
Dallas Fire-Rescue said around 12 people are still unaccounted for. Crews remain on scene working through debris, supported by drones and specialist search teams.
Footage from the area shows emergency crews, police and utility workers inspecting the remains of the structure, while surrounding streets remain cordoned off as investigations continue.
“We saw the explosions. It was three explosions,” local resident Karla Gomez said, adding that people were seen running from the apartments as the blast unfolded.
Another resident, Johnny Castro, said many were still processing the scale of the destruction. “A lot of people lost their homes and their belongings and pets,” he said, adding hope that missing would still be recovered even if just to provide ‘closure’ for loved ones.
Officials confirmed that federal investigators have now taken over the case, with utility company Atmos Energy assisting on-site. Investigators are examining the cause of the blast, with early focus on potential gas infrastructure failure.
