Ghana’s male senior football national team, the Black Stars, lost by 2-0 to the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in the opening Group C match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké late Thursday.
Playing in front of their vociferous home fans, the Ivorians took control of the game right from the blast of the whistle as Malik Yalcouye opened scoring in the 44th minute for the 2023 Africa champions.
Cote d’Ivoire added a second in the 58th minute through a penalty converted by captain Frank Kessie after Yalcouye had been fouled by Ghanaian attacker Fatawu Issahaku.
With the win, Cote d’Ivoire tops Group C with three points, while Ghana sits at the bottom of the group. Somalia and The Gambia, the other countries in the group, are yet to play their match.
Ghana will play their next AFCON qualifier against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sept. 29. Enditem
