Ghana loses 2-0 to Mexico in pre-World Cup friendly

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

Ghana’s male senior football national team, the Black Stars, lost 2-0 to World Cup co-host Mexico in an international friendly in the wee hours of Saturday in Puebla.

This becomes the third time Ghana has lost in a pre-World Cup friendly, having gone down to Austria and Germany last month.

Ghana, playing without their recently appointed Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz and also with most of the key players absent, conceded in the second minute of the game when Brian Gutierrez scored for the hosts.

The Black Stars, after the goal, put themselves together but could not find the equalizer until the break.

Back from recess, Gutierrez doubled the lead for Mexico in the 54th minute. Despite the multiple substitutions effected by assistant coach Desmond Ofei, Ghana could not find a consolation goal until the end of the match.

The West Africans will now prepare for their next and final friendly against Wales in Cardiff on June 2.

Ghana, making their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia in the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The Black Stars will play their first match in the World Cup against Panama on June 17, before playing against England, and Croatia on June 23 and 27 respectively. Enditem
