Meet the ‘Ghetto Kids’ – the Ugandan viral youth dance troupe set for major stardom after being hand picked by global icon Shakira to perform with her at the football World Cup final half time show in July.

“This is a dream come true. First of all, it’s a dream come true. We never when we started dancing, by the time we started dancing, we never imagined that we would wake up one time and perform with one of the biggest global artists like Shakira,” said Ronald Sentongo, Social media manager and creative director.

Footage shows the youngsters from Kampala practising their routines at their dance centre – with additional video of their stunning viral performances on social media.

Busingye Daniella Josephine, one of the group said: “I am so excited to share a stage with one of the most popular and respected artist all over the world called Shakira, though I’m nervous but I will be happy to perform with her.”

Sentongo explained that they “rose to fame when we featured in the song called city by Ugandan artist… So we rose to fame in 2013, and the official video was shot in 2014.”

“That’s when we rose to fame. That’s basically the genesis of everything. So we and my other group members, we featured in the video and then it went viral. Then we started performing here in Uganda and outside Uganda. Then we formed Ghetto Kids,” he revealed.

The group – formed in 2014, of orphans and vulnerable children – were seen in the video for Shakira’s World Cup anthem ‘Dai Dai’.

“The image I want to put there is that Africa is a continent full of joyful people and very hard working people. And the image I want to put there – the other image is that Africans can do anything,” added another of the group, Segirinya Madwana.

Ghetto Kids will join Shakira on stage on July 19 – and from then on, it’s surely global stardom!
