GPL: Kotoko fails to end Heart of Lion’s unbeaten run

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The Porcupine club, Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s much-anticipated return to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium ended in frustration as they were held to a goalless draw by league leaders Heart of Lions in Match Day 4 of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) on Sunday.

Playing before their home fans and home ground for the first time in months, Kotoko were eager to mark the occasion with a victory.

However, the Kpando boys displayed high level of resilience and tactical discipline that have made them the surprise pacesetters this season, taking a valuable point to remain unbeaten after four matches.

The game produced few clear chances, with Kotoko striker Albert Amoah coming closest to breaking the deadlock. His audacious bicycle kick in the 26th minute struck the crossbar, drawing gasps from the home fans but failing to count as a shot on target.

While Lions enjoyed more possession, Kotoko looked slightly more threatening in attack, registering six attempts compared to Lions’ four. Coach Karim Zito, celebrating his birthday, would have hoped for a better result, but his side’s lack of cutting edge in front of goal proved costly.

Kotoko will face Bibiani Gold Stars next in one of their outstanding fixtures on Wednesday, October 8, before clashing with Hearts of Oak and Basake Holy Stars, as they build momentum toward their CAF Confederation Cup encounter with Wydad Casablanca.

Meanwhile, Heart of Lions remain top of the Premier League table, one point ahead of Medeama, and will next welcome Berekum Chelsea to Kpando. Enditem
