GPL: Samartex beats Medeama 2-1 to end unbeaten run

Medeama SC suffered their first defeat of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) season after falling to a dramatic 2-1 loss to FC Samartex 1996 at the Nsenkyire Arena on Sunday, a result that saw the hosts move level on points with the defending champions.

Following a goalless first half, Samartex broke the deadlock in the 54th minute through Joshuah Fuseini, who put the home side in front and sparked celebrations among the home supporters.

Medeama, however, responded with determination and appeared to have rescued a valuable point when Dominic Amponsah found the back of the net in the 79th minute to restore parity for the Mauve and Yellow.

Just when the visitors looked set to leave Samreboi with a share of the spoils, Christian Agyenim delivered a decisive blow, scoring three minutes into injury time to snatch all three points for Samartex. The late winner sparked wild celebrations at the Nsenkyire Arena as Nana Agyeman’s men secured a memorable victory over the reigning champions.

The defeat represents Medeama’s first setback of the campaign and brings an end to their unbeaten start to the season. Despite the disappointment, the Tarkwa-based side remain at the summit of the league standings with 14 points after seven matches, maintaining their position on superior goal difference.

However, their advantage at the top has narrowed, with both Hearts of Oak and FC Samartex also sitting on 14 points after the same number of matches. Samartex’s victory has therefore strengthened their position among the early contenders for the league title, while Hearts of Oak remain firmly in the race. Enditem
