Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah: A proven champion of women’s development and community transformation

The attention of the Constituency Executives of Afram Plains North has been drawn to attempts to suggest that Hon Betty Krosbi Mensah’s defeat in the 2024 parliamentary election was as a result of poor performance as Member of Parliament for Afram Plains North.

We consider such assertions mischievous, misleading and a disservice to the people of the constituency, especially considering the remarkable interventions Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah undertook during her tenure, at a time when the NDC was even in opposition.

This also brings to mind the defeat of the NDC in the 2016 general elections, where H.E. John Dramani Mahama was our flagbearer.
It didn’t take long for Ghanaians to come to a realization that he was indeed competent and performed well while in office.

Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah demonstrated that leadership is not only about holding political power, but about identifying the needs of women, young people and communities and responding to them with commitment and compassion.

A RECORD THAT SPEAKS FOR WOMEN

Her interventions directly contributed to women’s economic empowerment and social wellbeing. Among them were:

Donation of freezers to some Branch Women Organizers & Traders to support and expand their businesses.

Provision of Loan facility to all Branch Women Organizers in Afram Plains North Constituency to establish and strengthen their livelihoods.

Provision of dryers to hairdressers and sewing machines to seamstresses to improve their trades.

Payment of hospital bills for numerous women who needed medical assistance.

Sponsorship of female youth to acquire vocational skills, including hairdressing and dressmaking.

Financial and material support for widows & disabled persons helping vulnerable women meet their basic needs.

Support for Women at Secondary and Tertiary levels of education.

ICT training for our young Women and Youth in general.

Provision of incubator, delivery and other hospital beds to the Presbyterian Hospital, Donkorkrom and other health facilities in the Afram Plains North Constituency.

Completion of abandoned clinics at Faso Bator and Abotanso(started by the erstwhile H.E. John Mahama in 2015) to help improve access to primary healthcare services for women and children.

These interventions demonstrate a clear understanding that women’s empowerment must go beyond political speeches. It must provide women with the tools, skills, resources and opportunities they need to become economically independent.

WHY HER EXPERIENCE MATTERS

Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah’s record provides a strong basis for her bid to become National Women’s Organizer of the NDC.

A National Women’s Organizer must understand the realities confronting women at the grassroots. She must understand that women need access to skills, capital, equipment, healthcare, education and sustainable livelihoods.

Hon. Betty has already demonstrated this understanding through practical interventions in Afram Plains North.

Her record shows that she does not merely speak about women’s empowerment, she invests in women.

It is therefore understandable that the constituency executives and many grassroots members who have witnessed her work remain firmly behind her candidature.
They have seen firsthand what she was able to accomplish as an MP, while her party NDC was in opposition and believe that, with greater responsibility and resources, she can replicate this impact across the country.

A CALL TO SUPPORT HON. BETTY KROSBY MENSAH

The contest for National Women’s Organizer is not merely about personalities. It is about choosing a leader with the experience, compassion, grassroots connection and proven commitment to women’s development necessary to lead the NDC women’s wing.

Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah has already proven what she can do with limited resources as an opposition MP which rightly places her for women empowerment.

We believe that with the collective support of the party, she can build a stronger, more economically empowered and more united women’s wing for the task ahead.

Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah is experienced.
Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah is compassionate.
