Yoruba movie “Derin Vs Life 2” produced by filmmaker and actress Irewole Olaniyan has recorded a remarkable performance on YouTube surpassing two million views, after initially attracting more than 1.4 million views within its first 24 hours of release.
The sequel, which premiered on August 21, 2026, on Irewole Olaniyan TV, stars Olaniyan alongside Nollywood actors Gabriel Afolayan and Tunde Aderinoye.
Its rapid rise has positioned the movie among the latest Yoruba productions demonstrating the growing power of YouTube as a distribution platform for Nigerian filmmakers.
According to Ranks Africa, Derin Vs Life 2 crossed the 1.4 million-view mark within a day of its release, with the platform describing the response as another indication of the growing strength of Nollywood’s digital film market.
The film’s momentum continued after its first-day milestone. YouTube trend trackers subsequently listed it at about 1.7 million views, with more than 28,000 likes and 3,900 comments, placing it at No. 1 among trending Film & Animation videos in Nigeria at the time of the tracking.
More recent channel analytics from SubSub put the movie at over 2 million views, with about 33,400 reactions, while the original Derin Vs Life has accumulated approximately 3.8 million views on the same channel.
The sequel runs for approximately one hour, 55 minutes, and continues the story introduced in the first instalment.
The story once again revolves around Derin and the unpredictable turns life takes, with relationship and family issues forming an important part of the drama. Social-media reactions to the sequel particularly focused on the character of Shalewa and her complicated relationship with Gbenga.
One promotional post described the story by saying, “Life happened to Derin but Shalewa is part of the life,” while viewers in the comments debated the choices made by the characters, particularly Shalewa’s return to her former partner.
The response also suggests that the sequel has successfully generated conversation beyond its view count. Several viewers praised the performances, while Gabriel Afolayan’s portrayal generated considerable humorous reactions online.
Afolayan himself has engaged with some of the reactions to the film on social media, with viewers describing his performance as one of the highlights of the production.
Beyond the performances, director Mo Fakorede has also received recognition for her work on the sequel. Ranks Africa credited Fakorede’s direction with helping balance the film’s emotional moments, humour, tension and relationship-driven scenes.
For Olaniyan, the performance of Derin Vs Life 2 represents more than the success of a single movie. It demonstrates the audience she has been able to build around her storytelling.
The first Derin Vs Life had already established a substantial audience, with approximately 3.8 million views recorded on Olaniyan’s YouTube channel. The sequel’s rapid opening therefore suggests that viewers who connected with the first story were willing to return for the continuation.
