President John Dramani Mahama has expressed support for the country’s senior male football national team, the Black Stars, as they open their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Panama, according to a statement on Tuesday.
The statement signed by Felix Keakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Mahama observed that the Black Stars carry the hopes, dreams, and heritage of the people of Ghana.
“As you stand on the threshold of your first match against Panama in Toronto, the government and the over thirty million people of Ghana stand firmly behind you. This fifth World Cup appearance is a testament to the resilient spirit of our nation,” read the statement.
He reminded the players of their responsibility they carry on football’s biggest stage, noting they represent not just themselves but the aspirations of Ghanaians.
The Ghanaian president called for discipline, belief, and national pride, urging the players to give off their all for the flag of Ghana and the next generation.
The four-time African champions open their Group L opening match against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto late Tuesday. Enditem
