Mahama urges Ghanaian football fans to return after World Cup

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaian football fans who will travel to North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to ensure they return home after the tournament, warning that visa overstays could damage Ghana’s diplomatic standing and travel privileges.

Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament on Friday, February 27, Mahama said Ghana has worked hard to regain its five-year non-immigrant visa status with the United States and cautioned that irresponsible conduct by fans could push the country back onto a travel ban list.

He stressed that authorities have been informed that Ghana must guarantee that supporters who travel for the tournament comply strictly with visa conditions and return after the competition.

Mahama added that it would be unfortunate if thousands of Ghanaians attended the World Cup and refused to return, undoing years of diplomatic efforts. He therefore appealed to fans to support the Black Stars responsibly and protect Ghana’s international reputation.

Ghana will be based at Bryant University in the United States and will face Panama, England, and Croatia in the group stage of the tournament. Enditem
