Drivers in Miami, Florida, faced sharply higher fuel prices and concerns over diesel supplies as motorists and businesses across the United States grappled with rising costs at the pump.
Footage from Friday shows vehicles refuelling at Chevron, Wawa and Murphy USA stations, digital price boards and fuel pump displays, as drivers describe how higher prices affect their daily expenses and businesses.
“Prices right now, it’s out of control. I mean, if you equate what you actually make out of working, and then you got to spend that at the pump instead of spending it on food, on food items and stuff like that. I don’t think it’s fair to the American community or to the American people,” a driver said.
Another motorist noted that the increase came suddenly and is adding pressure to everyday expenses. “One day I woke up, it’s – it went high. So I don’t really like it. We need money to pay the gas,” she shared.
A local business owner remarked that the surge was particularly difficult for companies dependent on gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, as passing higher operating costs on to customers was not always possible.
“I have a company that runs only on gasoline and diesel, so it affects me a lot because all the machines I use run on gasoline and that is a big problem for me because people don’t want to pay more,” he said.
The driver pointed to diesel selling at around $6.30 (5.48 EUR) a gallon (3.785 litres), stressing the price was affecting businesses and the wider economy.
“It’s the first time it’s been this expensive, and everything runs on that. So. I mean, very bad for the economy that we’re going through right now,” he stated.
Another motorist acknowledged the increased cost but linked it to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
“It seems a little high to me, but it’s for a reason. There’s a war and it has to be fought, right?” the driver declared.
The national average diesel price crossed $6 (5.22 EUR) a gallon for the first time earlier this month as the conflict with Iran disrupted supplies.
