The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Thursday petitioned the Minister for Finance over more than GH¢380 million in locked-up funds belonging some 19,000 mineworkers.

The funds include workers’ provident and welfare savings, leave savings, individual deposits and severance packages that became inaccessible following the financial-sector clean-up.

The union argues that the affected workers placed their money with financial institutions licensed and regulated by the Bank of Ghana.

The mineworkers say the continued delays of the funds have brought untold financial hardships among their members could.

They have called for urgent intervention from both the Finance Ministry and Bank of Ghana, saying they have waited for years for their funds to be recovered.
