Minority to present ‘true State of the Nation Address’ on Monday – Afenyo-Markin

The Minority in Parliament has announced plans to present what it describes as the “true State of the Nation Address” on Monday, March 2, in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s 2026 SONA delivered on Friday.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, said the President’s address failed to reflect the real hardships faced by ordinary Ghanaians.

According to him, while the government focused on macroeconomic indicators, issues such as rising electricity tariffs, youth unemployment, job losses, and concerns over security service recruitment were downplayed.

“By Monday, we, the Minority, will present to the people of Ghana the true state of the nation,” Afenyo-Markin told Parliament, insisting that the government’s account does not match the lived realities of citizens.

He also argued that some of the economic gains highlighted by the President stem from policies implemented by the previous administration, including the gold-for-reserves programme, and should be duly acknowledged. Enditem
