NPP boycotts utility tariff public hearing

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has boycotted an invitation by the Public Utility Regulatory Commission to attend a public hearing on utility proposals, according to a statement on Monday.

The statement, signed by party General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, observed that there is no basis for such a review at this time.

“The New Patriotic Party is in receipt of an invitation extended to the party by the Public Utility Regulatory Commission to attend a public hearing on the submitted utility tariff proposal for the 2025-2029 multi-year tariff review,” read the statement.

“The NPP shall not attend the said stakeholder engagement because the party does not see any justification for any engagement on possible utility tariff increment at this moment when Ghanaians are already overburdened by the rising cost of living occasioned largely by the government’s introduction of new taxes, including the Energy Sector Levy, or the ‘dumsor’ levy,” it added.

According to the party, there is absolutely no need for any such conversation to start with, because the dumsor levy, which was hurriedly passed, rakes in over 575 million Ghana cedis every month and over 5.7 billion annually, and it wants the government to use part of the revenue to support the operations of the regulated utility companies.

The PURC in recent months has suggested a review of electricity and water tariffs to enable the companies to provide better services to the public. Enditem
