At least 25 people were killed and many others injured in two separate raids by suspected terrorists in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Adamawa, local authorities and residents said Thursday.
The night raids targeted the neighboring villages of Kirchinga and Garaha in the Madagali and Hong local government areas, respectively, late Tuesday, the police said. The attackers, arriving on motorcycles, indiscriminately opened fire on residents and were believed to be members of the Boko Haram terror group.
Citing ongoing rescue operations in the areas and confirming the magnitude of the attacks across the two districts, Adamawa police spokesman Suleman Yahaya-Nguroje told local media on Thursday that the death toll might increase.
In Kirchinga, more than 18 bodies have been recovered after the attackers, who wore military camouflage, swept through the community market, Abubakar Lawan Kanuri, the village head, told the media.
In the neighboring Hong community, seven more bodies were recovered, according to local media reports quoting witnesses.
Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri condemned the attacks on the social media platform X, describing them as “cowardly acts of terrorism,” and said the government was collaborating with security agencies to “pursue the perpetrators and ensure justice is served.” Enditem
