The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Latvia’s Charge d’Affaires in Moscow, Ramona Krasovska, over Latvia’s demand to dismiss all staff at the social welfare section of the consular department of the Russian Embassy in Riga, the capital of Latvia.
The Latvian measure puts pension payments and social security at risk for nearly 6,000 Russian military pensioners and their family members residing in Latvia, the ministry said in a statement.
Moscow says the Latvian authorities’ move violated the country’s obligations under a 1994 intergovernmental agreement between Russia and Latvia on social protection for Russian military pensioners and their relatives.
The ministry stressed that Russia has consistently fully honored its commitments to this group of beneficiaries. It said Latvia bears sole responsibility for the artificially created crisis over military pension disbursements.
A formal diplomatic note was handed to the Latvian side. Enditem
