South Africa condemns U. S. military strike against Venezuela, urges UN Security Council Session

The government of South Africa has condemned the military strike by the United States of America (USA) against Venezuela, according to a statement released here on Saturday.

According to the statement issued by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, South Africa sees the action as a violation of the Charter of the United Nations.

“The Government of the Republic of South Africa notes with grave concern the recent developments, which the United States of America confirmed that it has conducted “a large-scale military strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicholas Maduro, who has been captured along with his wife and flown out of the country,” read the statement.

“South Africa views these actions as a manifest violation of the Charter of the United Nations, which mandates all Member States refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state,” it added.

The Southern African country called on the United Nations Security Council to convene an urgent meeting to address the issue.

At the United Nations Security Council, several countries have condemned the United States for using the fight against terrorism as a pretext to interfere in Venezuela. Nations of the Global South called for de-escalation and dialogue. Enditem
