US President Donald Trump says Washington is in no hurry to reach a deal with Iran, claiming American forces have devastated its military and could strike one or two remaining sites in just ’10 minutes’.
Speaking to reporters at a Halloween party at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Saturday, Trump was asked about the timeframe for Qatar-mediated negotiations to end the US-Israeli war with Iran.
“Look, we’re not in that much of a hurry from the standpoint that we’ve knocked out their navy, we’ve knocked out their air force, we’ve knocked out their anti-aircraft, we’ve knocked out almost every piece of military equipment they have,” Trump said.
“We’ve knocked out a lot of their manufacturing capabilities. We’ve knocked out the nuclear. We’ve knocked out their nuclear. We still have to take care of, I would say, one or two sites. But we can do that in 10 minutes. 10 minutes. So we have that plan,” he added.
Iranian negotiators continued discussions with Qatari mediators in Doha on Sunday. It was the third consecutive day of discussions, following meetings in Tehran on Friday and Doha on Saturday.
Diplomats are trying to prevent renewed fighting after the November 3 US midterm elections. Trump has said Washington will not launch new attacks before the vote, but has not ruled out further military action afterwards.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Trump had not decided whether to launch fresh strikes and would prefer a diplomatic solution.
