At least 11 persons are reported dead while 13 others have sustained injuries following an accident on the Ofankor-Pokuase stretch in the wee hours of Thursday, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed.
Divisional Officer Grade 1 (DO1) Emmanuel Bonnie of the GNFS Public Relations and Operations Team said the accident, which occurred at the Ofankor barrier, a suburb of the Ghanaian capital on the Accra-Kumasi highway, involved two tipper trucks, two sprinter minibuses, two saloon cars, and a tricycle.
According to him, the GNFS received a distress call at approximately 4:00 a.m. local time regarding a collision involving about six cars and a tricycle.
Emergency teams, DO1 Bonnie emphasized, arrived quickly at the scene to find passengers heavily trapped inside the mangled vehicles and immediately began work to manage the scene and extricate the trapped victims.
He, however, confirmed that his outfit received news later on that the 11 persons had lost their lives.
“Rescue teams pulled out 11 unconscious victims and handed them over to the police. We later received confirmation that all 11 of those victims had passed away, and an additional 13 injured casualties were rushed to the Achimota Hospital for treatment,” said DO1 Bonnie.
He stated that authorities were still actively gathering information from all sources, including eyewitness accounts to establish the cause of Thursday’s accident. Enditem
