Seventy-one (71) fishermen who were attacked by gunmen at sea off Senya Breku in the Central Region on Thursday have been rescued, authorities have confirmed.

The victims were brought to shore in batches by a joint rescue team comprising the Marine Police and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The operation was launched after reports emerged that several fishermen had been left stranded at sea following the attack.

According to earlier accounts, the fishermen had set out in the early hours of Thursday for their usual fishing expedition, and while returning to shore, they were allegedly ambushed by armed hijackers in a black boat.

The assailants reportedly opened fire and stole outboard motors and generator sets, leaving the fishermen helpless in the water.

The attack has raised fears among coastal fishing communities, where such incidents are reportedly increasing. Enditem
