NPP criticizes Mahama’s administration for deploying state institutions against political opponents

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday accused the John Mahama-led administration of deploying state institutions against its perceived political opponents.

Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Accra, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong expressed worry over what it perceives as political interference in the work of the judiciary and the security agencies.

He observed that state institutions that are supposed to operate in an independent and fair manner are being used to silence and suppress their political opponents.

“The party has held demonstrations and numerous press conferences reminding President John Mahama and his government that we are a nation of rule of law. We have asked the government to stop its continuous weaponization of the state security and the judiciary against political opponents,” said Kodua Frimpong.

The NPP General Secretary, however, observed that despite the appeals for operating within the confines of the law, the government has failed to listen to their cry but resorted to constantly engaging in abuse of power.

He also expressed worry over what it described as persistent violations of constitutional rights, particularly Article 14 of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantees bail for persons arrested or detained.

“It is increasingly concerning that the state security agencies continue to flout with impunity the Constitution of Ghana, particularly Article 14,” added the NPP General Secretary.

Kodua Frimpong, however, emphasized that the largest opposition party will not be intimidated by what it considers targeted actions against its members and vowed that the party will not back down in its pursuit of justice and accountability. End item
