The China-aided Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, the first of its kind in Sierra Leone, has officially launched at the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital in Freetown, the capital.
The care unit, inaugurated on Wednesday, is equipped with cardiac monitors, defibrillators, ventilators, and other specialized devices, enabling centralized monitoring and timely treatment for patients with acute and critical cardiovascular conditions.
According to the 26th batch of the Chinese medical team to Sierra Leone, the country has long faced a growing burden of cardiovascular diseases and a shortage of critical care resources. The establishment of the care unit aims to help bridge this gap and marks a key milestone under the Sierra Leone-China Paired Hospital Cooperation Mechanism Project.
At the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Health Charles Senessie thanked the Chinese expert team for supporting Sierra Leone’s efforts to expand its cardiovascular care capacity. He pledged to make full use of the new platform to strengthen diagnosis and treatment services nationwide.
Tao Xueyong, deputy director of the Health Commission of Hunan Province in central China, said he expects Chinese team members to work closely with their Sierra Leonean counterparts to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the unit.
Tao stressed the importance of technology transfer and talent development to help build a localized professional team and create “a medical team that never leaves.”
The Chinese medical team said it will continue deepening cooperation through technical training, case discussions, and other exchanges to support long-term improvements in Sierra Leone’s healthcare system. Enditem
