GAF resumes Accra recruitment today after El-Wak tragedy

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is resuming the suspended 2025/2026 Accra recruitment exercise in the Greater Accra Region on Thursday, November 20, 2025, after last week’s tragedy at the El-Wak Sports Stadium.

Instead of concentrating everything at El-Wak Stadium, screening will now be done at eight sub-centres across five locations, including;

El-Wak Stadium (2 centres)

Nicholson Park, Burma Camp (2)

Air Force Base, Burma Camp

TRADOC, Teshie (2)

Eastern Naval Command, Tema.

Applicants will be processed in batches of 600.

Qualified applicants will receive SMS messages telling them their batch number, reporting date, and which centre to go to.

To reduce congestion, relatives and friends, according to the GAF, will not be allowed into the screening centres.

GAF has replaced the entire recruitment team for Greater Accra. The new leadership includes:

Commodore F. A. Nyarko – Director General, Human Resource

Colonel F. Kusi-Darko – Director, Manpower

Colonel G. B. Eduah – Director, Information Technology

A Board of Inquiry has been set up to investigate the stampede at El-Wak.

Victims (injured) are being treated free of charge at the 37 Military Hospital until discharged.

GAF says there will be a “special recruitment package” for both the injured (once they recover) and the families of those who died.

GAF is urging applicants to follow the instructions carefully, especially about reporting times and centres.

They’ve also explicitly asked that only applicants go to screening — no non-applicants allowed — to avoid repeat crowding.

On Nov. 12 this year, a deadly stampede occurred at El-Wak Stadium during the recruitment screening.

At least six people died, according to GAF, while several others were injured; some were sent to the ICU of the 37 Military Hospital in the national capital.

The stampede is believed to have been triggered by a massive surge of applicants pushing to get into the stadium.

The recruitment deadline had recently been extended by one week due to technical issues on the online portal, which may have contributed to the large turnout.

The high turnout reflects the significant interest (and possibly desperation) among young Ghanaians to join the military, which is seen as a stable career path. Enditem
