The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has elected former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate to lead the party in the next general election, the Electoral Commission (EC) announced late Saturday.
According to the EC, Bawumia polled 110,643 total valid votes, representing 56.48 percent, while his closest contender, former legislator Kennedy Agyapong, garnered 46,554 or 23.76 percent.
Former food and agriculture minister Bryan Acheampong and former education minister Yaw Osei Adutwum polled 36,303 or 18.53 percent and 1,999 or 1.02 percent, respectively, while former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong polled 402 or 0.21 percent of valid votes cast.
In all, a total of 196,462 delegates cast their ballot in Saturday’s presidential primary. Out of the figure, 561 ballots were rejected.
With his victory in Saturday’s party primary, this is the second time the former Vice President has been elected to lead the largest opposition party in the West African country after leading the NPP into election 2024 but lost to current president John Dramani Mahama.
In his acceptance speech, Bawumia urged unity among themselves as that is a necessary step in recapturing power in the next election.
“I will begin a targeted engagement to revitalise our party. Every voice matters, every opinion is vital in our quest to rebuild the party and to capture political power,” said the former Vice President to party supporters.
With the NPP presidential primary over, Bawumia will lead the main opposition party in the 2028 general election against the ruling National Democratic Congress, which will be presenting a new candidate after President Mahama completes his tenure in office. Enditem
