NDC Zongo Caucus Greater Accra Coordinator and Former Ayawaso East Constituency Organizer, Ismaila Ali Horoya, has warned the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Majority in Parliament to stop attempts at undermining the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary.
According to a statement on Monday, the NDC Zongo Caucus Coordinator observed that allegations of vote-buying in Saturday’s primary are misleading.
“I, Hon. Ismaila Ali Horoya, NDC Zongo Caucus Greater Accra Coordinator and former Ayawaso East Constituency Organizer, issue this emergency statement to directly address the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC and the Majority Caucus in Parliament over their posture and public commentary regarding the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary,” read the statement.
“Let me state this clearly and unequivocally: the allegations of vote-buying being associated with Baba Jamal, the duly elected parliamentary candidate, are false, misleading, and unsupported by evidence. Baba Jamal won this primary fairly, on merit, and through the confidence delegates have in his record and commitment to Ayawaso East,” he added.
According to him, delegates within the constituency voted with conscience and conviction, not because of inducement, and that to suggest otherwise is to insult the integrity of party members who have stood by the NDC through difficult times.
“I find it deeply troubling that the Functional Executive Committee and the Majority Caucus in Parliament would take positions or issue statements that cast doubt on a democratic internal election, thereby fueling tension, uncertainty, and division within the party,” he further stated.
He further indicated that Ayawaso East has endured years of stagnation and missed opportunities and that the delegates made a deliberate choice for a candidate they believe can finally bring meaningful development and strong representation.
Hon. Horoya warned that any attempt to annul the primary or delegitimize its outcome will be interpreted by the grassroots as a direct attack on internal democracy and could have serious consequences for party cohesion and electoral fortunes.
He called on the Functional Executive Committee and the Majority Caucus in Parliament to immediately de-escalate, allow peace to prevail in Ayawaso East, and rally behind Baba Jamal as the legitimately elected parliamentary candidate.
The governing NDC held a parliamentary primary at the Ayawaso East Constituency on Saturday to replace the late Member of Parliament.
Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed was declared elected after polling some 431 valid votes. His closest contender, Hajia Amina Adam, wife of the late MP, polled 399 votes.
However, there were allegations of vote-buying and vote-selling, which the party has condemned and set up a three-member committee led by Mr Kofi Totobi Quakyi to investigate the matter and submit its findings to the party for action.
The Majority Caucus has called on the party leadership to annul the parliamentary primary over allegations of vote-buying. Enditem
