Two Ghanaian soldiers are critically injured while one other has been trumatised after coming under attack while serving on a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Southern Lebanon, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) confirmed in a statement on Saturday.
According to the statement signed by Captain (Ghana Navy) Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General Public Relations, the Ghanaian Battalion headquarters under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was stuck by a missile attack during exchanges between the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group.
The Ghana Armed Forces also confirmed the attack occurred within a short time window in the evening.
“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the general public that as a fallout of the current on-going IDF and Hezbollah exchanges in Southern Lebanon, the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters in United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL), Lebanon came under two missile attacks between 1745 and 1752 hours local time today,” read the statement.
“Two soldiers are critically injured, while one other has been trumatised. Additionally, the officers mess facility also got hit and has been burnt down completely. The injured are receiving treatment at the Level One Medical Bunker and are currently stable while arrangements are underway for thier evacuation to UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital,” added the statement.
Meanwhile, the Ghanaian government has protested the incident at the UN headquarters in New York and urged the parties involved in the conflict in UNIFIL to be mindful of their responsibilities regarding the safety of all peacekeepers. Enditem
