Spanish brigade helps pull man alive after 72 hours trapped in collapsed Maiquetia home

Rescue teams pulled out alive a man who had remained trapped among the rubble of a collapsed home in Maiquetia on Saturday after the earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 that shook the country on Wednesday.

Footage shows personnel from Spain’s Military Emergency Unit (UME) leading the rescue alongside other teams. Rescuers could be seen cheering as the man was brought to safety and became visibly emotional, before crews returned to searching the rubble for more survivors.

The rescuers used specialised equipment to remove the rubble and ensure the area’s safety during the operations, which lasted several hours until they located the survivor.

This rescue adds to the one carried out by the UME at the Vistamar residential complex in La Guaira, where a woman was brought out alive after spending 72 hours trapped beneath the rubble.

According to the Venezuelan government, the death toll had risen to 1,430, with 3,238 people injured. It said 78,448 missing-person reports had been filed, with 13,475 people located and 50,606 still out of contact.

In response to this situation, the authorities reinforced security in La Guaira by militarising the state to facilitate rescue efforts, safeguard the distribution of humanitarian aid, and maintain order in the most affected areas.
