‘Don’t chase us like animals’ – Foreigners board buses from harsh Durban camp as evacuation deadline looms

Foreign nationals in Durban have packed their belongings and boarded buses as thousands of people seek evacuation from South Africa following violent anti-migrant protests.

“The way they’re treating the people, that situation is not right. Please, cool down, everyone, because that thing is not right <…> Don’t chase us like animals,” a foreign national from Malawi said, adding that people were being forced into desperate conditions.

Footage filmed on Monday shows evacuees camping and queuing with their belongings in harsh conditions, and shop owners pulling down shutters and lock their premises.

South Africa has been on high alert ahead of June 30, when anti-immigration groups have called for undocumented migrants to leave the country.

Several African governments have prepared contingency plans and repatriation operations for their citizens, as fears grow of further unrest.
