‘Meeting in Doha is going to be perhaps important, perhaps not’ – Trump

Donald Trump claimed a meeting with Iranian negotiators in Doha – which Tehran has denied is happening – would be ‘perhaps important, perhaps not’, speaking from the White House on Monday.

“There’ll be a meeting on that tomorrow in Doha. And they’re going to Qatar. I think they’ve already left, or they’re just about getting ready to leave. So we’ll see how that goes, but we’re doing very well on that front. But the meeting in Doha is going to be perhaps important, perhaps not,” he said. “We’re going to find out. But we’re winning militarily. It’s almost won militarily, I would say.”

“And it’s really very simple. It’s the denuclearisation of Iran. We don’t want them to have a nuclear weapon, and they’re not going to have a nuclear weapon. They’ve agreed to that in all fairness,” he went on.

Iran and the US agreed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ earlier this month, giving the sides 60 days to secure a final deal following the war.

While Iran is sending a delegation to Doha, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said it had ‘no relation’ to the US trip: “We will not have any negotiation meetings at any level with the American side in the coming days.” The sides have traded strikes in recent days, blaming each other for breaking the ceasefire.
