The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), together with several other political parties, is today embarking on a nationwide demonstration, describing the protest as a peaceful effort to defend Ghana’s democratic institutions and constitutional order.
The demonstration, dubbed the “Democracy Under Attack” protest, is expected to take place in Accra and other regional capitals.
According to National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, the march is intended to draw public attention to what they describe as growing threats to democratic governance, the rule of law, and the independence of key state institutions.
The NPP has indicated that leaders and supporters of allied political parties, civil society groups and sympathisers will join the march, which they say is aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s democratic credentials rather than advancing partisan interests.
Security agencies have been deployed to provide protection and maintain public order, with organisers urging participants to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the exercise.
The demonstration comes amid heightened political tensions, with organisers insisting that the protest is a constitutional exercise of the right to freedom of assembly and expression guaranteed under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. Enditem
