Ferocious downpour swamps Valencia town in half an hour

Torrential rain flooded streets, shops and homes in Torrent, near Valencia, on Wednesday evening, with around 71 litres per square metre falling in just 30 minutes.

Footage shows vehicles moving through deep floodwater, cars partially submerged and water pouring into ground-floor properties.

Nearly 95 litres per square metre were recorded in Torrent during the storm, according to the Valencian Meteorological Association (AVAMET). Emergency crews were deployed to help people trapped in vehicles and respond to flooding in homes and garages.

Authorities sent emergency alerts to mobile phones across coastal areas of Valencia province, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from waterways and ravines.

The downpour also disrupted transport, forcing the suspension of Metrovalencia services and the temporary closure of Valencia airport.
