A 52-year-old South African arriving from Ghana has been arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport in an intelligence-led operation, with police seizing suspected heroin valued at R2 million or 123,000 U.S dollars, according to South African authorities on Sunday.
The suspect was detained on Sunday following a coordinated operation between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Border Management Authority (BMA).
The South African authorities confirmed that the man had just disembarked from a flight originating in Accra, Ghana, when officers moved in to intercept him.
A thorough search of his luggage, the police said uncovered bullet-like objects and blocks containing substances subsequently identified as suspected heroin.
Reiterating the service’s zero-tolerance stance, SAPS leadership emphasized that specialized units will continue to deploy aggressive, intelligence-led tactics to dismantle and dislodge transnational drug syndicates operating across African trade and travel corridors. Enditem
