Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations, Stan Dogbe clarified on Friday that the demolition of structures along the La Beach area in Accra was not part of the government’s flood mitigation exercise.
According to Mr Dogbe, the operation was conducted under the supervision of National Security following a request from Labadi Beach Hotel.
The exercise targeted structures including Polo Beach Club and other permanent structures situated on the beachfront in front of the hotel.
In a Facebook post on Friday, October 2, Mr Dogbe said the operation was separate from the work of the government’s flood mitigation task force at locations including Kpeshie Lagoon, East Legon Boundary Road, Oyarifa and behind Mayfair Estates.
He said Labadi Beach Hotel had raised concerns that the structures were affecting the hotel’s safety, tranquillity, reputation and visitor experience.
Mr Dogbe also cited sanitation and security concerns associated with what he described as unauthorised and unregulated commercial activities along the beachfront.
The demolition was supervised by personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, with support from the Ghana Police Service. Enditem
