The Black Starlets of Ghana beat Togo 1-0 in their Group A opening match of the 2026 West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone B championship at the August 4 Sports Stadium in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Saturday evening.

David Kwarteng scored the only goal just seven minutes into the encounter, handing the Ghanaian side the valuable three points in their quest to qualify for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana’s goal came from a set-piece routine delivered by Abdul Latif Wunzalgu, which was initially blocked and in a goal-mouth melee; captain Abdul Rafiu Issah followed up with an attempt that eventually fell to Kwarteng, who finished it off to give Ghana an early lead.

Despite the early lead and several opportunities created during the game, the Black Starlets failed to find the net again until the final whistle.

With the win, Ghana now sits on top of Group A with Burkina Faso and Benin following with a point each, while Togo sits at the bottom with no point. Ghana will return to action on Oct. 13, against Benin in their second group game.

The tournament also serves as the route for qualification to the 2027 U-17 AFCON. The two finalists will secure automatic spots to participate in the continental showpiece next year.

The U-17 WAFU Zone B tournament, which started on October 10, is scheduled to conclude on the 23rd of this month. Enditem
