PM announces ‘partial curfews tonight’ after chaos, riots across the country

French PM Sebastien Lecornu announced ‘partial curfews’ in France from Monday night, after days of violence swept the country – and were seen right across Europe too.

“To put it bluntly—and forgive me for using the word—the chaos is very localised in certain urban centres,” he claimed. “So I asked the prefects to impose a number of curfews tonight, partial curfews, and as part of that process they will consult not only with mayors, but also with the chambers of commerce and industry.”

“We’re not dealing with ordinary, generalised crime here. We’re dealing with a very specific form of criminality: looting, including the resale of some of the goods that have been stolen,” he alleged.

Earlier, President Emmanuel Macron rejected Interior Minister Laurent Nunez’s offer to resign after the weekend of violence, which came after education protests surged right across France in recent weeks. Nunez admitted to a ‘loss of control’ by police forces in some cities.

The past two days saw 2,400 arrests and nearly 1,000 police officers reported injured, according to the authorities. Violent scenes have also been witnessed in Italy, Belgium, Spain, Portugal and Albania.
