Beginning July 1, 2025, the Ministry of Education will supply food items to various Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country, according to a statement released here over the weekend.
The statement, signed by Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, Acting Director-General for the Ghana Education Service (GES), said the Education Ministry will liaise with heads of Assisted Senior High Schools to carry out the exercise.
According to the statement, the rationale behind the exercise is to ensure timely delivery, guaranteed quality, and quantity of food.
“From 1st July, 2025, the following arrangements will be put in place, subject to further discussions and consultations with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) to ensure timely delivery, guaranteed quality and quantity of food,” said the statement.
Among the foods to be supplied by the Ministry of Education to second-cycle institutions are rice, tom brown, hot chocolate, vegetable oil, palm oil, and sardines.
The rest are mackerel, tin tomatoes, margarine, sugar, milk, and flour.
Meanwhile, head of schools, under the new arrangement, are to procure gari, peanuts, soya beans, millet, maize, and beans for their respective schools.
President John Dramani Mahama, before the 2024 general election, criticised the supply of food to SHSs by the National Buffer Stock, which was centralised, and promised to allow heads of second-cycle institutions to procure the items themselves. Enditem
